Hydra

A rich naval tradition and a cosmopolitan island ambience are the defining characteristics of Hydra – a popular hilly island in the Argosaronic Gulf – which attracts every year many personalities and jet-setters from Greece and abroad. This was the favourite destination and place of residence of painter Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghika, Leonard Cohen, and Henry Miller. The island’s great beauty was appreciated also by celebrities such as Maria Callas, Pablo Picasso, and Sophia Loren.

Apart from being a popular sailing destination, Hydra is also very interesting from an architectural point of view, as a number of luxury residences, built by Italian craftsmen, are scattered on the island. The grand houses of the local fighters for the Greek War of Independence (1821) are now museums which offer their visitors an insight into that particular period in Greek history. If you are interested in religious monuments, there are some 300 churches and 6 monasteries you can visit on the island. Walking about the island is a true pleasure as it is car-free. Once you are on Hydra as there are no cars, bikes or mopeds, you must anticipate walking, taking a sea taxi, beach boat or riding a mule to get around!

Dining out on Hydra is an unforgettable experience of tasty food and plenty of romantic atmosphere. Try the Caprice Italian restaurant, Mikra Agglia bar-restaurant,  Hydronetta Beach Bar Restaurant and Omilos for dinner. Don’t miss to zip a drink at the famous Pirate Bar. On the edge of the harbor, on a rooftop of an old traditional house with great views, Veranda restaurant will reward guests with classic Italian and Greek flavors.  Spilia Beach Café-Bar is the closest point to Hydra Town and harbour, where you can sunbathe and swim from the rocks and platforms below.

Internationally renowned Greek collector Dakis Joannou chose an old slaughterhouse to create a showroom and exhibit space called DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art. Each summer, innovative exhibits, hip happenings and events with international appeal attract famous visitors from all over the world (https://deste.gr/hydra/).

Favorite experiences on the island:  Hydra is a great destination for hiking. The trails are organized and well-marked and many paths await for you to discover. The horse trekking experience will take you back in time while visiting chapels & monasteries, ride to the beach and a tip for the most enthusiastic swim bareback in the sea.
